CHRONICLES OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTIONby Sandra ShotlanderA young woman looks back on her struggle to survive the tumultuous years of the French Revolution. This is a fast-paced sweep through French history, from events leading to the fall of the Bastille, to the Terror in 1794. In Brechtian style, the play accompanies the sparsely armed crowds storming the Bastille, and the 6000 women who marched to Versailles. It follows the path of ill-fated Marie Antoinette and the exploits of revolutionary Theroigne de Mericourt. In the final scene it is clear women played a much greater part in the Revolution than knitting while heads rolled. Yet what did they achieve? Chronicles of the French Revolution is ideal for secondary school production. It can be done lavishly with elaborate sets and period costumes, or stripped back to basics for a small space and a tight budget.

1995 Methodist Ladies’ College, Melbourne, VIC Reviews/comments‘The boldness of the women and their colourful characters was a delightful feature to highlight in the production, as was the satirical flavour which permeates the script ... Directing Shotlander’s moving and skilfully manipulated account proved to be both challenging and highly rewarding.’ Jana Ure, drama teacher, Calvin Christian School What's in the Resources pack?
