GATE 38

by David Megarrity
read extract

Airports are places of transition, empty halls of fleeting comings, goings and waitings. Gate 38 follows the experiences of four groups of young people trapped at this point of departure. As contact with the outside world is cut off, and rumours of Armageddon spread, the focus is placed squarely on what they’re doing, and where they might be going. A non-traditional musical set at the end of the world.

Gate 38 was commissioned by MacGregor State High School’s Centre of Artistic Development, as part of the Queensland Theatre Company’s Artists in Schools Program.

Reviews/comments

‘What I found special about the play was its simplicity, a simplicity that allows any director or producer of the piece to go as in-depth or as shallow as they like. As a whole it’s quite complex, with interweaving plot lines and grand, mystical themes such as the End of the World; you realise a world is ending for each of the characters in one way or another. The play is the tip of an iceberg, its massive potential lies just underneath the surface.’ Sam Green, QUT cast member
