His plays have been produced and toured nationally and internationally, and he has won many awards for his work, including AWGIEs from the Australian Writers' Guild in 2002 and 2004. He has received international literature residencies from the Australia Council to Canada and Ireland, and in 2007 he won an Asia-link literature residency to India.

Between 2005 and 2007, Stephen had five new plays produced. They were: 'Miss Blossom Callahann' (ABC Radio and Bakehouse Theatre, Adelaide), 'A Thing Called Snake' (Adelaide Festival's In Space program), 'Vin' (Jigsaw Theatre, Canberra, and for Adelaide Come Out 2007), 'Just Like That' (Radio Adelaide/Bakehouse Theatre) and 'Meeting Reg' (commissioned by Hepatitis Australia and to tour nationally).

In December 2007, Stephen directed 'The Whyalla Monologues' (d faces theatre of youth, Whyalla, and Country Arts SA), and in 2008 he will direct two world premieres of his new works. Many of his plays have been profiled by and are available through the Australian Script Centre.
