Producing an Australian Play

Before producing or performing any play, you must obtain permission from the rightsholder.

You will normally be required to pay production royalties, which can vary and must be negotiated with the playwright or the playwright's agent.

As a general guide, the royalty for school and non professional productions is $100 per performance (+GST) or 10% of gross box office receipts, whichever is the greater.

Plays with music

Some playscripts include music or sound recordings. Producers are advised to contact the Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) for information on music licensing requirements.

Contacting the rightsholder

We're happy to help put you in touch with the rightsholder of any play found on this site.

Simply click the 'production enquiry' button on the relevant play page and fill out the short enquiry form; providing details of your planned production.

We'll forward your enquiry on and have the rightsholder contact you.

TIP: Avoid leaving production rights to the last minute. It is a process that can sometimes take a week or so to finalise.
