UTZON
by George BavintonIt is 1963, and Jorn Utzon, the Danish architect, is in Sydney, overseeing the construction of the Opera House he designed. But his strong vision is being obstructed and undermined at every turn. As hostility towards him grows within the government and the Public Works Department, and amongst senior architects, he is portrayed in the press as the man solely responsible for intolerable delays and increasing costs. When he presents the government of the day with an ultimatum, it is taken as a resignation, despite local and international protests. His final appeal to parliament fails to move the government to reinstate him, and he is left isolated like a modern day John Proctor.
