Tamara and Jasyn have been going out for nearly six weeks, Tamara’s counting. Jason’s not. Tamara reckons Jasyn’s different from other guys, something in his eyes, she can’t figure what.

They are both in year 10. Teachers would label them ‘at risk’. At risk of what? Leaving school? A risk to others or themselves? For Tamara and Jasyn, school feels pointless anyhow. Unless you can keep your i-pod on or you’re dosed up on red bull.

Tamara and Jasyn could be in love. Neither really knows how to tell. And some things are hard to talk about. What is love anyway? None of their parents are together. Tamara’s dad Laurence is a weirdo hermit. Her mum’s taking off for Brisbane with her new bloke and his kids. Jasyn doesn’t know his parents. He lives with Aunty. She’s strict but depressed ‘cause his brother Dane is in prison for dealing. He’s about to get parole.

Tamara and Jasyn are trying to have a relationship but without knowing anybody who is in one, it’s kind of hard to know what to do. When you listen to songs about love on your i-pod it sounds so easy. But really, it’s not.
