THE WORLD COMES TO INGHAM
by John du Feu
The World Comes to Ingham tells the history and development of the sugar town of Ingham from pre-settlement to the present day. The story focuses on the parts played by women and family life against a background of impossibly harsh conditions. It shows the effects on ordinary people, both white and Aboriginal, and of the landmark moments in the political, social and economic development of a rural community.
The story begins with the life of the first girl born to white settlers, continues with her daughter, who marries into an Italian family, and ends with her granddaughter who, a hundred years later, debates whether to stay or leave for the city.
