THE SOLDIER'S TALE

by Chris Thompson

The Soldier's Tale is an adaptation in rhyme from the CI Ramuz - Igor Stravinsky piece, L'Histoire du soldat (1918). It is the classic story of a man who sells his soul to the devil - realises what he has given up and sets about redeeming himself in the hope of salvation. In this adaptation, Joseph (the soldier) barters his cultural soul - his violin - for an almanac that promises him an endless winning streak on the pokies and at the casino. But like Midas, Joseph soon discovers that all gold does not necessarily glitter and that the more he wins, the more he feels his loss.

This adaptation is written to accompany the Igor Stravinsky score for L'Histoire du soldat.
