THE MESSENGERS

by Wayne Macauley

In an unnamed desert location, two messengers meet, each carrying news for the opposing sides of a war that neither of them has ever seen. For years they've carried their messages back and forth, but no message has been able to change the situation. The war goes on and on. Finally, one of them has an idea: they will swap uniforms, go to their opposing camps and try themselves out on each others' generals... "At last, an Australian play that is non-naturalistic, metaphoric and also poetic. The Messengers is a beautifully crafted, affordable and succinct work that manages to convey all that is ludicrous about the concept of war. With resonances of "Good Soldier Schweik" and "Waiting for Godot", this is a contemporary work as equally relevant to Israel and Palestine and the Cold War as it is to Bush's new world."
