THE PLAINCLOTHES HAMLET

by Stephen Measday

The sun is setting on the court of Elsinore. King Hamlet is a buffoon, Queen Gertrude follows the fillies of fashion and kingly brother, Claudius, plots and schemes for a more modern monarchy, kingship with a logo, sovereignty tied to industry and commerce. Prime Minister Polonius sways with the prevailing political breeze, Ophelia broods over lost love - and Prince Hamlet has renounced his title and taken up screenwriting in Hollywood.

When King Hamlet's body is found in the garden a new character steps into the picture - Inspector Horatio, Elsinore C.I.B. Who is behind this nefarious deed? What's the motive? Why do bodies keep piling up in the castle? Are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in the pay of the Secret Service? And what will Hamlet do on his return to Elsinore? The Plainclothes Hamlet reveals all...

'We found your play entertaining and a successful update of the "Hamlet" story. We believe it would work very well as a show for younger people due to your playful use of modern vernacular, which has the effect of conveying the plot simply and straightforwardly. Casting Horatio as a detective makes for a great go-between audience device too.' Ginnie Stephens, Assistant Dramaturg, Royal Shakespeare Company.
