STATUES OF DAVID
by Julia Lewis
In September 1991, an Australian tourist in Florence attacked Michelangelo's Statue of David with a mallet and smashed the second toe of its left foot. Who was this man? Why did he attack a work of art?
Statues of David is a short black comedy about a happy couple who are torn apart when the Statue of David strolls into their living room. Man is pitted against man, love against lust and ambition against failure as all three characters struggle to face the truth about themselves and each other. As the Statue tells Gina: "Look behind the surface, honey!"
