CENTRE CAUGHT
by Peter Fyfe
Two boys, Benjamin and David, meet clubbing, under the watchful eye of a tennis umpire, who scores their every move and mistake. Things go well until Benjamin says, "I love you", which is called "out" under the rules. David wins the first act.
The two boys meet again, this time at a dinner organised by James (whom Benjamin is seeing) and Patricia (James' oldest friend). A game of a very different kind ensues, skilfully manipulated by Patricia (doubling with the Umpire from Act One). David plays like a champion, but cannot win Benjamin until he stops playing the game, proving he's a contender for the real game.
