Australian plays on stage in 2013

16 Jan 2013

Selected highlights from across the country

There’s always a lot of talk – in foyers, in the press, over dinners, in bars – about the ‘State of Australian Theatre’. How are we going to support our writers? How are we to get our stories out there? It’s a delicate industry that can easily feel as if it’s in a crisis. In these days of economic rationalism where ‘KPIs’ and ‘measurable outcomes’ are paramount, it’s easy to feel threatened and apprehensive as an artist.

But looking through the national calendar (and this listing is by no means exhaustive) I feel really excited. There are so many amazing projects slated for 2013 - new work, adaptations and a substantial amount of plays receiving their second or third production.

Sydney has burst out of the blocks with The Secret River (Andrew Bovell, STC), Rust and Bone (Caleb Lewis, Griffin Independent / Stories Like These) and an adaptation of Peter Pan (Tommy Murphy, Belvoir). Malthouse Theatre in Melbourne is about to open a much-anticipated revival of Stephen Sewell’s Hate and Playwriting Australia is gearing up for their annual festival, held this year in Perth. WA theatre lovers should also check out the Summer Nights season at the Blue Room - looks awesome. Queensland theatregoers get to see a new production of Tommy Murphy’s Holding the Man (La Boite) as well as a double bill of Peter Houghton's The Pitch and The China Incident (QTC). Meanwhile Adelaideans get treated to Sue Smith’s version of The Kreutzer Sonata (State Theatre, SA). And that’s just the first 6 weeks!

As the year rolls on, the treats keep coming. Keep an eye out for The Cake Man and Coranderrk at Belvoir St, The Floating World (Griffin) and Griffin Award winner This is Where We Live (Griffin Independent / Just Visiting), Babyteeth and Maggie Stone at State Theatre, SA, Shrine at Black Swan Theatre Company, The Shadow King at Malthouse Theatre and, a personal highlight, Laser Beak Man (by Back to Back Theatre at Malthouse and Sydney Theatre Company).

And, finally, a huge shout out to all of those companies (and artists) who devote themselves entirely to the production and development of new work. There are many, but of course Griffin Theatre in Sydney, the Blue Room in Perth and La Mama in Melbourne have long been the engine room for our theatres.

Here’s to a wonderful, rich, strange and magical year of theatre in 2013.

See you there,

Tom Healey

THE BOOK OF EVERYTHING

Richard Tulloch

Presented by Melbourne Theatre Company

27 November - 22 December

Southbank Theatre, The Sumner - Southbank

It is 1951 and nine year-old Thomas can see things no one else can: tropical fish thriving in the Amsterdam canals, a hailstorm of frogs and even Jesus himself (who turns out to enjoy a good old chinwag). He also sees the unhappiness of his family, and the violence in his father fuelled by the pain that lingers long after the war. All this – good and bad – he carefully records in his magical and hopeful Book of Everything.
