EXTRACT: I barely knew the boy. I could recognize him from the photograph that I was shown, but other than that.. I didn't know him at all. Students come and go. I don't necessarily know anything about their lives outside of school. I can't be expected to. Personally, I think it would be wrong for me to ..involve myself with their personal circumstances. We all have our own lives, outside of this institution. Some lives are more difficult than others, some are more ..complicated. There is a line to be drawn, and that line is at the school gate.

EXTRACT: All the police wanted to know was whether or not anyone in the school had known where Ali was. For some reason it was important, whether or not anyone in the school had helped them. He looked straight at me. He didn't blink. I tried not to blink as well.
