EXTRACT: I barely knew the boy. I could recognize him from the photograph that I was shown, but other than that.. I didn't know him at all. Students come and go. I don't necessarily know anything about their lives outside of school. I can't be expected to. Personally, I think it would be wrong for me to ..involve myself with their personal circumstances. We all have our own lives, outside of this institution. Some lives are more difficult than others, some are more ..complicated. There is a line to be drawn, and that line is at the school gate.

EXTRACT: All the police wanted to know was whether or not anyone in the school had known where Ali was. For some reason it was important, whether or not anyone in the school had helped them. The person whose garage it was, whose car it was, had already been taken into custody. But the police needed to... sort out the details. (Pause) I told them that I knew nothing about it.

EXTRACT: I didn't say anything that I meant to say. Perhaps I knew that I wouldn't. (Pause) There were three policemen in the room. One of them seemed to be paying no attention at all. He just stared out of the window. He looked terribly bored. The second one took notes. I could hear her pen scratching on the paper in her notebook. The third one asked the questions. He looked straight at me. He didn't blink. I tried not to blink as well.
