EXTRACT: ROSE: Poor Derek.
ROSE: (more to herself) How does that happen?
[BETH hears her question. She makes a choice to speak:]
BETH: It doesn’t, not right away. Takes little bits, over time, little knocks, to bend you out of shape so completely.
Your whole life is just going through the motions, making plans, settling down—not ‘cos you want to, mind, you’re not even thinking about the choices you’re making. You’re just a twig caught on a big river.
And you don’t notice, or complain, ‘cos everyone’s doing such a good job of telling you, this is right. You’re doing all the right things, all the things you’re supposed to. Marriages, kids, the whole thing.
