Where are the Women?
The creative voice of women in Australian theatre is the hot topic for this year's Philip Parsons Memorial Lecture, as a panel of prominent Australian arts practitioners gather in Sydney on 6 December to consider the question, "Where are the women?"
Following the launch of their 2010 season, there was a lot of discussion about Company B Belvoir "running a theatrical boys' club" (SMH), which in turn has spurred a much bigger debate about the representation of women in key creative positions industry wide.
Moderated by ABC Journalist Monica Attard, the afternoon promises lively discussion and much debate around this issue.
This event will also feature the announcement of the 2009 recipient of the Philip Parsons Young Playwright's Award. This award is presented annually to a writer under the age of 35 whose work demonstrates an original and compelling theatrical voice. The recipient is given a paid commission to write a new work supported by Company B Belvoir.
Amongst the shortlisted writers for 2009 are Van Badham, Tahli Corin and Caleb Lewis who have plays available on AustralianPlays.org. Congratulations to all shortlisted writers.
