Patrick White Playwrights’ Award and Fellowship winners announced

The winner of the Patrick White Playwrights’ Award was announced in Sydney on 20 May. Melissa Bubnic was given the prize for Beached, in which “the fattest man in the world searches for love and salvation."

The $7,500 prize is for a full-length unproduced work.

At the same Sydney Theatre Company event the recipient of the inaugural Patrick White Playwrights’ Fellowship was announced as Raimondo Cortese.

The Fellowship is a $25,000 year-long position for a established playwright.  It includes leading playwriting workshops at STC and mentoring emerging playwrights.

Raimondo Cortese graduated from the VCA School of Drama in 1993 and is a founding member of Ranters Theatre, of which he was the Artistic Director from 1994 to 2000. His plays include: Lucrezia and Cesare, The Room, The Large Breast or the Upside-Down Bell, The Fertility of Objects, Features of Blown Youth, Roulette, St Kilda Tales and Holiday.
