Stpehen wrote, produced, scored and directed his first play in 1990: a revue called Vocations, staged at the Odeon Theatre, Norwood, Adelaide. His next play, Attempts to Draw Jesus, was staged by the Walkerville Village Players in 1993 in Adelaide. He used the material from this play to write his first novel (of the same name) that was published by Allen and Unwin in 2002.

During the intervening years he has written and published seven novels, twice nominated for the Miles Franklin award, Commonwealth Writers' Prize, and others.

He also works as a freelance journalist and teacher.

His third novel, Time's Long Ruin, is being adapted into an opera to be premiered by the State Opera of South Australia in 2019.
