R Johns


In 2017 the Staatstheater Nürnberg produced R. Johns' political thriller Black Box 149, the first time this German State Theatre has produced a work by an Australian playwright in repertoire. The play was in DFAT’s Australia now Germany program. Invited by WPI to Riksteatern Stockholm, the work was first produced at La Mama and published by Currency Press. Tchekov at the House of Special Purpose (Currency Press) is on the 2019 VCE Theatre Studies Playlist. As Told by the Boys Who Fed Me Apples, (Currency Press and VCE Drama Playlist 2017) was nominated for an AWGIE in Community and Youth theatre. Carrying Shoes into the Unknown is set in Iran. (An extract is in Contemporary Monologues for Young Men and Women: Volume 2, LAMDA, Oberon Press UK, and was on the VCE Theatre Studies Playlist.) At the Centre of Light about Mary MacKillop was commercially produced at the 12th Night Theatre Brisbane (with an extract published in Scenes from a Diverse World Anthology U.S.A,) presented in Mumbai, first seeded at La Mama Explorations. The sell-out Stray (Currency Press) is told from a dog’s point of view (2014 VCE Drama Playlist).Bring on the Talent satirises acting gurus.
Rosemary has been a finalist for The Griffin Playwriting Award and the 2018 BBC International Playwriting Radio Competition. Her work has also been performed in Athens, Cape Town and New Zealand . She writes and creates performing arts experiences for rural students and is Vice-President of Women Playwrights International.
