Vanessa Bates

Vanessa Bates is an award winning writer for stage, screen and radio.
Plays include Trailer (Tantrum Theatre), Light Begins To Fade (Ensemble Theatre), Every Second (Darlinghurst Theatre) The Magic Hour(Deckchair Theatre), PORN.CAKE (Malthouse Theatre, Griffin Theatre), Checklist For An Armed Robber (Vitalstatistix and many others) and Darling Oscar (Sydney Theatre Company, Black Swan Theatre Company).

Current works include: A Ghost In My Suitcase (commissioned by Barking Gecko for 2018), Tiny Beautiful Things (7-ON), The Source Of Joy, The Hummingbirds, The River When It Ran With The Red Blood of Rubies, Chipper.

For her plays, Vanessa has won a NSW Premiers Literary Award, an AWGIE Award, an Inscription Chairman’s Award, Inscription New Work Award and two CONDA Awards. She has been awarded a Varuna Residency and a Keesing Studio Residency at the Cite Institute des Arts, Paris. Her plays have been selected for Playwriting Australia’s New Script Workshops and New Play Festival leading to a selection for the National New Play Network Festival (USA) as well as the Australian National Playwrights Conference. She has received several Australia Council Literature New Work grants.

She has been further shortlisted for the University of Newcastle Newton-John Award, the Victorian Premiers Literary Award, the STC/Patrick White Play Award (twice) and the Griffin Theatre Award (four times).

She has had several plays published as well as a narrative nonfiction book Legs Up and Laughing, (currently adapting for web series).

Vanessa is a graduate of NIDA (Playwrights Studio).
