Don Quick is a contemporary dramatic retelling of elements of the classic novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It is set in Melbourne, Australia in the present day. The play tells two stories. In the first, Michael Cervantes, an Australian playwright, is imprisoned for sedition, along with his manager Charlie Mustafa. While awaiting trial Michael tells the story of Don Quick to his dangerous seeming cell mates.
Don Quick is an old man who lives in suburban Melbourne and reads great romantic novels. Escaping from the confines of his narrowing life he takes his imaginary friend, Charlie Spinoza on the road in his faithful Datsun 120Y called Rosey.
