THE DEVIL MAKES THREE

by Paul Mitchell

Mark Rawson and his wife Fiona live in a fictional western suburb of Melbourne. From different socioeconomic backgrounds, their marriage is tempestuous. The birth of their first child, Liam, is the happiest time of their lives. However, soon after their second child Jack’s birth, their relationship comes undone.

Fiona is a stay-at-home Mum not yet ready to re-join her white-collar profession. Mark is a blue-collar worker who has dreams of running his own business. When he assaults a co-worker, he is dismissed from his full-time construction job. He convinces Fiona that now is the time for him to own and operate a bait shop. It fails, leading the couple to financial hardship. Mark exhibits in his marriage the characteristics of his aggressive father, Reg. The couple receives counselling, but finally separate.

Fiona is from a rich family so the divorce doesn’t ruin her. Mark, however, is financially desperate. Due to the violence he perpetuated in his marriage, the court severely limits his opportunities to see his sons. His feelings of anger towards his ex-wife grow, along with feelings of negative self-worth. He attends anger management classes, but only in the hope it allow him to see his boys. He is permitted to spend a night away with them. Upon returning from that fishing expedition, a major conflict occurs with his ex-wife via phone. In a fit of anger he throws his son Jack to his death from the LinkWest Bridge. Fiona and Liam struggle to ensure Jack’s murder is not in vain, and their strength to live and thrive provides hope that violence will not have the last word.
