BRAINCHILD

by Chris Dickins

Brainchild is a play for three actors. It has an unusual format. The play begins with William, a theatre director, visiting his daughter Helen in hospital. Helen has just given birth to a baby girl. From there the play goes back in time to Helen’s own birth 20 years ago, and then, scene by scene follows Helen's life through significant birthdays. Helen is a gifted child who feels keenly her parents’ busyness and self-preoccupations. As she moves into her teenage years Helen becomes involved in alcohol and drug abuse. The play ends on a note of hope as the family drives to West Australia to engage with the natural world and to view the Aurora Australis. Brainchild has been professionally produced, studied in secondary schools and has been performed by drama students.
