MORNING GLORY

by Michelle Best

Morning Glory is a modern Australian domestic comedy. Set in a trendy Melbourne eatery, it explores the repercussions of a 20-something year old chef's decision to run a business with his parents' help. Simon and his kooky partner, Lara, are prepared to indulge in the ultimate test - working alongside his parents. The melding of personal and business lives creates a unique brand of conflict and comedy. The play touches on a number of social issues and dilemmas including loyalty, friendship, love, parenting, our modern obsession with food, materialism, travel, consumerism and personal identity. The characters are Barb and David, a married couple in their 50s; their son, Simon who is a chef; his partner, Lara who is a recovering shopaholic; trainee Josh who is the youngest character but has a partner and child who are dependent upon his income; and Mick, who is an old friend of Barb's. The arrival of Mick, who was once a successful rock musician, creates considerable tension and self-reflection within the group.
