THE OVERCOAT

by Peter Staite Grasshopper

'The Overcoat' is an adaptation for the stage of the classic Russian short story by Nikolai Gogol.

AKAKY AKAKIEVICH is a down-trodden copying clerk at the bottom rung of the bureaucratic hierarchy of a Government Department in St. Petersburgh in the 1840's. His life is restricted to a small apartment, the bustling streets of St. Petersburgh and his copying desk where he expresses his obsessive love of lettering and is despised and humiliated by his fellow-workers. He is bullied into ordering a new overcoat, goes to a party, is mugged on leaving the party and his coat is stolen. He dies that night in a delirious fever.
